Rendered in a gestural style, Amber Fey's "Vaudeville" is meant to evoke a feeling of old Hollywood. "I have always loved classic Hollywood movies. My dad and I have a tradition of watching them whenever I visit home," she says. Layering inks and paint on deckle-edge paper, the portrait plays with contrasting concepts of bold brushstrokes and delicate features, dark inks and light shadows. Reproduced here to emulate the artist's original techniques. A black wood frame presents the work in a shadow-box style.
Amber Fey is a Montreal-based artist who uses photography and graphic design to "find elegance in the ordinary." She describes her work as having "many stylistic quirks, depicted with simple shapes and compositions."
