"I was always drawn into the mystical aspects of fog and atmospheric depth," says artist Benoit Pelchat. Inspired by Costa Rican cloud forests, "Santa Elena" represents the effect of dense fog on the forest canopy, bringing forth serenity and peace of mind. Layers of textured plaster create depth, scale and complexity while white gesso lends a pure, simple finish.
Benoit Pelchat is a Montreal-based artist who favors heavily layered abstract elements in a minimalist palette. "My work aims at finding a way to capture the essence of a moment, of a time and space by abstracting landscapes and other elements of the built environment into simple shapes, forms and colors," he says. His point of view is informed by his global travels and formal training in architecture, industrial design and visual effects.
