Ancient relics and the civilizations that once revered them serve as inspiration for "Relique." To create the textured surface, Stephane Fontaine applies cement and sand gel to the canvas with layers of acrylic and gesso for a matte finish. Muted variations in tone and texture "mimic the weathered stone and tarnished metals of archeological finds, drawing the viewer into a tactile dialogue with history," the artist explains.
