Four Outdoor Spaces to Get You Psyched for Summer

It's never too early to get inspired

For months, those of us in colder climates have been looking for ways to bring the outside in, from botanical-inspired designs to actual botanicals. But now the weather is starting to shift, the days are getting longer and we are so ready to just go outside forever now, please. In preparation, we’re getting inspired by some of our favorite outdoor spaces from tastemakers and celebrities all over the country.

SARAH SHERMAN SAMUEL

Interior Designer, Michigan

We’ll never stop loving Sarah Sherman Samuel’s gorgeous backyard in the woods of Michigan. The longtime Los Angeles resident’s client lists includes standout names like Mandy Moore and Garance Dore, so it’s no surprise she was able to seamlessly translate her signature laid back, West Coast-influenced style to her native Midwest. There’s plenty of space to sunbathe by the pool, roast s’mores by the firepit or throw a party that includes all of the above. (So, uh, when can we come back?)

NICOLA FORMICHETTI

Stylist and Creative Director, New York City

Nicola Formichetti is one of those people who doesn’t just know what’s cool — he decides it. The stylist/creative director/designer is a true multi-hyphenate, having led major fashion brands like Diesel and Mulger and collaborating with none other than Lady Gaga on some of her most memorable looks. We’re envious of his career path, sure, but we might be even more envious of all that outdoor space in Manhattan. Just look at those skyline views.

JAMES HARDEN

NBA Player, Houston

It’s v. tempting to make a pun about how working with Houston Rockets star James Harden was a “slam dunk,” but it really was kind of a dream project. He and his designer AJ (also his sister) were inspired by the design-forward boutique hotels James has visited all over the world, and that inspiration totally comes through in the outdoor spaces. These are just a few of the spots we decked out; there’s a whole pool situation that’s to die for, too.

MEG BIRAM

Artist, Washington DC

Muralist Meg Biram’s DIY box hedge wall remains one of the most-talked-about projects in our office, even two years on. Classic CB2 pieces like the Tropez Natural Sofa and the Matera Dining Table create a perfect backdrop for solo relaxing or outdoor entertaining. As Meg notes, “There’s just something about gathering a bunch of friends together, being outside and having a good time. Life doesn’t get too much better than that.”
