Woven with a sense of cultural pride, this handmade oval bread basket is braided, dyed and sewn by a community of skilled artisans living in a remote area of Southern Mexico where native tropical palms grow in abundance. In a time-intensive process, grassy palm is first cut, boiled and dried in the sun to achieve the perfect texture. Artisans then carefully braid the fibers by hand and dye them into rich, saturated colors using centuries-old techniques passed down from generation to generation. Sewn into an organic oblong, each unique basket contrasts a natural interior with a deep brown exterior. From harvest through production, our collaboration on this initiative provides a steady source of income to artisans and their families.
