Chicago-based artist and photographer Bret Grafton turns his lens to a zoomed view of a sunflower rendered deep blue. Inspired by Van Gogh's obsession with cerulean blue pigment, Grafton uses the cyanotype photographic process to create a supernatural image of a tonal blue photo negative. In this process, a digital image is painted with a photo developing chemical on canvas then exposed in sunlight. Once the excess is washed away, a surreal image surfaces in shades of blue. "I have this idea that if Van Gogh was alive today, he would love the cyanotype process," Grafton says. "I want Vincent to be living in Paris today, running a quiet café and making little cyanotypes and selling them to tourists."
