monumental view. This original artwork silhouettes the historic Qutub tower in Delhi. Originally constructed in the 12th century as an Islamic monument, the five-story red sandstone and marble structure is the tallest of its kind in India. Brought to life by two traditional art forms, the canvas is first presoaked for 24 hours, then handpainted by an almost extinct community of Bollywood artists known for their kitschy, glam movie posters and sets. Using an ancient dabu mud-resist printing technique, the design is sprinkled with sawdust and left to dry in the sun. It is then immersed multiple times in vegetable-based dyes by artisans just outside Jaipur in the village of Bagru. Once washed, an intricate architectural image is revealed in a glow of light and shadow.
