chop off the old block. Our "living tree" project recycles urban forest old growth wood into naturally beautiful objects for living—without felling a single tree for lumber. This exclusive CB2 collaboration with Chicago designer Paul Pettigrew and Chicago urban foresters Erika and Bruce Horigan explores modern design with an exemplary respect for process. Using only Chicago-area trees harvested seasonally due to the effects of wind, damage and age, Chop Chop tables not only reduce the demand on our nation's forests, they are fabricated within the Chicago metro area minimizing the carbon footprint between tree source, mill and production. Stripped of their bark and squared into rectangular logs, each table is sanded and hand-rubbed with two coats of natural oil and a final wax coat. Concealed polished nickel glides protect floors. The natural variations in grain, dimension and color of trees that define the urban forest mean each table is unique. Air-dried to release moisture, wood checks appear enhancing each table's special character and markings with no changes to its structural integrity.

Designer Paul Pettigrew, Studio Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture, pursued the Chop Chop project as a personal response to a recent surplus of felled ash trees in Chicago's urban forest. Erika and Bruce Horigan, co-founders of Horigan Urban Forest Products, have been recognized by the Illinois Arborist Association for advancing the cause of wood recycling and by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center for significant achievements in protecting the environment.
