message in a vessel. Designed by Material Good Studio founder Lauren Burman, Little Shirley is named for her greatest source of inspiration—her grandmother. This simple, modern ceramic form is handmade of Washington state clay in an intricate process that takes 10 artists about one week to create. Each stoneware vessel is individually slip-casted and hand-finished on a wheel, twice-fired in a kiln and handpainted glossy yellow.
lauren burman. When Lauren Burman's grandmother Shirley was diagnosed with cancer, she decided to do something positive to honor her. She created the Little Shirley as a tangible gift for those who donated to her fundraising efforts for cancer research. In 2009, Burman opened Material Good Studio in Seattle to continue her mission, donating 10 percent of Little Shirley profits to community programs. Burman's signature vase embodies her appreciation for the clean lines, solid colors and expert craftsmanship of midcentury design.
