re-fabrication. Strips of recycled fabric called liriyan in Hindi, striate a bold spectrum of color in an original work by textile artist Gitto. In India, where fabric remnants are a large source of the country's thriving recycling industry, bright cotton trim is salvaged from the cutting floor of textile factories, torn into strips and arranged in a spontaneous pattern that makes each piece unique. Left unfinished, the fabric's raw edges add tactile texture to the cool-to-warm gradation, bordered by a matte black frame.
gitto. Working largely in print, Japanese-style Shibori, and weaving and embroidery techniques, artist Gitto creates graphic designs influenced by Art Deco and Bauhaus styles. Based in Jaipur, India, Gitto embraces the beauty of natural fibers as her canvas, often printing on and embellishing cotton, linen, wool and silk.
