We’re turning 15!

September 18, 2015

Reflections on a lifetime of growth from employees
who’ve been around since the early days.

Original CB2 store, Lincoln Avenue, Chicago
From our first store near Wrigley Field in Chicago to 14 stores currently worldwide, we’ve learned a lot along the way about our customers and ourselves. In honor of our 15th birthday, we asked a few longtime employees to share stories from the past and why they think CB2 has always had that special something.

“I worked at Crate and Barrel in the summers during high school and I was seasonal help on the sales floor at our first store. Back then it was the same as it is now: a fun company filled with nice passionate people, who have great energy. It’s just a great place to work.”
Ryan Turf
Managing Director
CB2 employee for 14 years

“We don’t have an overwhelmingly corporate environment so that keeps us more flexible and nimble when we need to make a change to stay ahead of the curve.”
April Head
Sr Catalog Merchant
CB2 employee for 9 years

“When we opened our first store and launched the brand, many suppliers celebrated with us that night, later producing small quantities of exclusive items. We also started locally with one freelance designer, who was there that night and still works with us. Today we collaborate with almost 100 domestic and international designers and artists, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them.”
Sandra Malec
Trend and Development Manager
CB2 employee for 13 years

“We love to experiment and so do our customers, which keeps us fresh and interesting from season to season.”
Curtis Potter
Creative Director
CB2 employee for 9 years

“When I started, CB2 didn’t sell anything online. One of my first assignments in June 2004 was to lead the team to launch cb2.com. Our first homepage took cues from the transportation theme featured in the early ads and was designed to look like a subway map with colorful icons representing product categories. We didn’t have products on the homepage. What were we thinking?!
Dave Widmer
eCommerce Brand Director
CB2 employee for 13 years

“CB2 is a special place to work because the bonds we form with one another are so strong. We’ve all grown up together. I have nothing but respect for the work of this amazing and diverse group of people I get to work with everyday.”
Cristina Roti
Project Manager
CB2 employee for 11 years

“We’ve evolved from a small offshoot of Crate to a stand-alone brand with our own, unique identity. We started with just a touch of furniture and everything from widgets to air mattresses to dinnerware, and we now have a full furniture collection supported by a full complement of decor, tabletop, bedding, bath, and more.”
Sara Harter
Director of Visual Merchandising Stores/Catalog
CB2 employee for 15 years

“In the beginning, the product felt young, and in some cases, loud. Now it’s much more sophisticated and aspirational. I feel like I grew up with CB2. There isn’t this attitude of “that isn’t my job” here. Everyone has ownership of what they do and goes above and beyond to get it done.”
Sara Khodja
Product Manager
CB2 employee for 12 years

“The culture back then was family-oriented and lovely, with positive energy and a sense of entrepreneurialism. Everyone had high expectations for success, and executives were always very kind. I’ve always appreciated being treated with a great deal of respect within this organization. I knew when I first started that I didn’t want to leave anytime soon!”
Allison Williams
Sr Director of Business Operations/Strategy
CB2 employee for 13 years

“What makes us special? People, passion, product and inspiration. Our unwavering commitment to deliver our best. And our amazing associates and customers!”
Steve Farrar
Sr Manager Retail Operations
CB2 employee for 12 years

Hi guys – I lived in Chicago when you opened your first store and still have a set of sushi plates from there! I also remember the first site design – you’ve come a long way but I’m happy you kept the unapologetically happy orange branding. Thanks for all the great customer service over the years and I hope to see you guys someday in Saint Louis! <3

Good Job
