brass rings. Inspired by the coiled metal arm bands worn by the women of Rajasthan, India, this gleaming brass and copper wire vase reflects a cultural tradition. In this region, the quality and abundance of jewelry adorning the women from head to toe is indicative of a family's social status. Heated and hammered to form concentric rings, this vessel was handcrafted by traditional sheet metal artisans, known as thateras, in the small town of Rewari. Here on the outskirts of New Delhi, families have created decorative metalwork for centuries. Designer Neelima Rao observes: "This piece keeps alive a visual vocabulary of craft."
neelima rao. Working primarily in metal and semi-precious stones, designer Neelima Rao creates objects that are a modern reflection of India's rich tradition of art and craft. "The combination of the decorative Indian crafts when juxtaposed with the demands of modernity and simplicity often gives rise to unexpected and unique fusion pieces," Rao says. Based in Faridabad, New Delhi, Rao finds inspiration in every village, town and city she travels to throughout India, each of which has its own craft or tradition of personal adornment or objects.
